Fantastic BAEA Workshop!

Casey's examples

What a wonderful workshop!  Sargent Art sponsored our most recent BAEA workshop.  It was facilitated by BAEA's own Casey Williamson.  The lesson we did was called "Interpreting Art Media," and it was a great lesson for our BAEA art teacher group because it really is adaptable for all grade levels (elementary, middle school, and secondary).  We hosted this workshop at the Birmingham Museum of Art last Thursday from 4:30-6:30 in conjunction with the BMA's monthly first Thursday event.

We had snacks, door prizes, and lots of art making and productive conversations.  If you would like to see the lesson plan you can download one from Sargent Art here.  It was also our biggest turnout for a BAEA workshop so far...we had 13 people I think and lots of new faces!

The lesson began by picking out an artwork from a book or magazine and focusing in on a 3 inch by 3 inch square.  Using a pre-cut template, we cut it out and mounted it to a larger board so it would be easier to keep up with the image.  Then we enlarged the image onto a 6 inch by 6 inch piece of paper.  Casey encouraged us to experiment with various art media to recreate and interpret the image.  Check out some of the pictures from the workshop!
Art teachers searching through art books and magazines to find the perfect image to use in their art work interpretation/enlargement.

Trent folding his 3 x 3 art image to help guide in his enlargement (grid method).

Abby sketching out her image.

Trent's final image.  I love the abstract expressionism quality of his piece.

Another completed image (on top) and original inspiration (on bottom).

My completed enlargement (on left) and original (on right).

Anna's original in red and her interpretation on the right.  I like how she used a different color palette in her interpretation!

Here are Casey's teaching sequence steps as well as potential accommodations and modifications to the lesson:

STEPS:
1) Have students practice using various mediums (may be done on a previous day).
2) Choose one artwork to use (from art books/magazines)
3) Use the 3 x 3 template to cut out an interesting portion of the artwork (can trim index cards to create the template).
4) Mount the example on mat board or cardstock.
5) Sketch the artwork onto a 6 x 6 piece of paper (pay attention to proportion!).
6) Make creative decisions about what medium to use based on what the artwork looks like.
7) Choose at least 3 different mediums to use (paint, oil/chalk pastels, markers, sharpies, crayons, etc.).
8) Create artwork (be aware of drying time).
9) Let artwork dry.
10) Mount or mat.  Enjoy your finished product!

Modifications:
1) Students could create a series.
2) Could give students specific artworks (based on ability level).
3) Teach students about mounting/matting beforehand.
4) Have students write a paper based on the artwork/artists/style.
5) Work on larger paper (9 x 9, 12 x 12, etc...)
6) Use the grid method to ensure proper proportion.
7) Create work for entire class based on specific artists or genre.

BAEA Workshop-Interpreting Art Media

BAEA Hands-on Workshop!!!
November 7th!!!

Casey will be teaching a workshop during First Thursday at the Birmingham Museum of Art on Thursday, November 7th from 4:30-6:30 pm in Studio 2.  I realize some of you have to come from far away, but feel free to come in whenever you can!  There should be plenty of time to catch up.   The workshop is titled “Interpreting Art Media” and is sponsored by Sargent Art.  This workshop will look at a great way to incorporate using various media into your classroom.  It can be tweaked to fit any age group.  Please bring examples of famous (or not famous) artwork, photographs, and ANY magazines you may have.   Also, please consider sticking around after the workshop and explore all the wonderful activities happening at the museum for First Thursday!

Since this is the first official BAEA meeting of the school year, we will be taking membership dues during this meeting as well.  Yearly dues are $10 for NAEA/AAEA members.  If you are not a member of NAEA, please consider joining!  It is a VERY valuable resource on many different levels.  If you are not interested in joining, non-members may pay the $25 workshop fee.  We can accept cash or checks.  Lindsay Mouyal will be printing off professional development certificates for all attendees.  Hope to see you there!!!

Did we mention there will be DOOR PRIZES?!?!?

Donna Russell (with the Alabama Alliance for Arts Education) sent me some information I wanted to share with you.  This summer they are hosting a workshop focusin on arts integration or SAIL (Sustaining Artful Instruction and Learning).  I attended last year(along with some of our other fabulous art educators: Mary Jake Coker, Shelly Bailey, Staci Jacks, Arlene Johnson, Jennifer Winholtz, Trista Nabors and more...sure I forgot somebody here).  So feel free to ask somebody about the experience.  It will focus on arts integrations, demystifying assessments in art education, and explore collaborations and partnerships.
It is going to be from June 30-July 3 at the Alabama 4H Center in Columbia.
Donna Russell says there are scholarships still available, so contact her for more information.  See message from her below and included attachment for more information...

Bird is the Word

We had a blast at the workshop Wednesday with Kellie Newsome.  Thanks to Alabama Art Supply for hosting us.  Thanks to Pam for baking us cookies.  Thanks to Kellie for a lovely workshop and thanks to everyone who came!

We learned a lot of mixed media techniques; including making photo transfers using both binders and modeling compound.  We experimented with concealing, revealing, sgraffito and over painting.  We also got to play with some beautifully vivid Atelier paints (you can get them at Alabama Art Supply). We went back and forth, working on two pieces at once.  We created sgrafitto bird nests and "Pretty Bird" photo transfers.

Kellie putting on her apron; gearing up for the workshop.

Everyone working diligently to rub away the paper to reveal the bird underneath.

Cheep, cheep!

Staci and Suzy working on their nests.

Some finished ones.

Birmingham Art Educators Host Silent Auction at Avondale Brewing Company
Guests will support professional development workshops by bidding on local and national artists’ work, among other items.

Birmingham—The Birmingham Art Education Association is hosting a silent auction at Avondale Brewing Company (201 41st Street South, Birmingham) 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15 to fund its professional development workshops for art teachers throughout central Alabama. This auction, open to the public, will include original artwork and other local business offers.

“With this event, we are hoping to establish a better grassroots connection with art patrons and would-be patrons of Birmingham, which makes Avondale Brewing an excellent venue,” said Lindsay Mouyal, a BAEA representative and participating artist. “The professional development activities that this event helps fund will impact our ability to develop the next generation of Alabama artists.” Past workshops have included topics such as the use of assessments in art education, cross-content connections through arts integration, teacher-tested art lesson plans and glass fusing with kilns.

Items for bid at the silent auction will include the following: original artwork by local and national artists, such as Jessie Rau, Sharon Christman and Becky Guinn; gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses; museum memberships; and more.

Daniel George Restaurant, of Mountain Brook, will serve refreshments during the event, and Avondale Brewing Company will open their private upstairs bar. Admission will be free, but bidders should make sure and bring cash or checks—the only accepted forms of payment for the auction.
